NOVEMBER 21

A Swedish company has developed a keyboard-simulating technology for mobile computer users who prefer touch-typing to tapping out their work on tiny keys. Senseboard Technologies says its Virtual Keyboard uses sensor technology and artificial intelligence to let users work on any surface as if it were a keyboard. The device detects movement when fingers are pressed down; these movements are measured and transformed into the intended keystrokes and then into text. The company claims the system is more precise than digital pens and voice-activated systems.

Only a few days after the September 11 attacks, pro-Taliban computer hackers in Pakistan penetrated several Indian government computers and posted messages of support for Osama bin Laden and his terrorism network. Computer experts say these computer break-ins illustrate what may be the next major battleground for terrorist organizations. Terrorists could use a remote terminal to seize control of electric power distribution systems, disrupt emergency telecommunications systems or shut down the operations of banks and financial institutions. On Nov. 2, the FBI issued the second of two advisories warning of increased potential for computer penetrations, stating "the potential for future (computer) attacks is high.”

Many businesses are concerned about workers shopping online from the workplace. Well, a recent study found that Irish Internet users are more likely than any other Europeans to shop online while at work, while Danish shoppers are the least likely to do this. Overall, 31% of European online shoppers buy on the Net while at work.
