Amazon.com recently unveiled a new service that lets bookworms search through pages of thousands of books available on its online store. The service, " Search Inside the Book ," lets people type in any keyword and receive results for all the pages and titles of various books that contain that term. In the past, customers could search only by author name, title or keyword. This search feature works with nearly 120,000 titles from 190 publishers, or some 33 million pages of searchable text. The service, launched as a partnership with the publishers that are displaying the titles, has been combined with the site's standard search. Customers can choose to click on the results, which will display an excerpt with that word or phrase, and a link to more references to the keyword in the same book. These references lead to a list of excerpts from all pages on the selected book, as well as a link to view the full page. A new Amazon unit is charged with building a shopping search tool for internal use and for other companies, thereby allowing the organization to develop outside of the books, apparel and sporting goods sold through its online mall. AT&T Wireless is launching hot-spot service at the Philadelphia International Airport as part of a larger plan to cater to business travelers with wireless data services throughout the United States. With the addition of Philadelphia, the wireless carrier and its partners now offer hot-spot service at a total of six U.S. international airports and in over 500 major hotels. The service has three price plans: $9.99 for 24 hours of service from a single location, $29.99 for up to five, 24-hour sessions from a single location and $49.99 for up to 10, 24-hour sessions from a single location. Subscribers have six months to use their service sessions. McDonald's has announced that it will team up with Hewlett-Packard to offer its clients across Brazil the ability to surf the Web while eating their Big Macs and fries. Already on the menu in 75 stores across the South American country, McDonald's "McInternet" service will be released to the rest of the 584 McDonald's outlets in Brazil by the middle of next year. Under the program, customers will be allowed to navigate the Web as long as they make food purchases at McDonald's. On average, there will be four computers at each McDonald's, which HP will provide. Because so few people in Brazil own computers with Internet access, Brazilian public Internet stations are expected to increase in popularity. Microsoft Corp. plans to release its Voice Command software for PDAs and cell phones. Microsoft Voice Command will allow users to dial contacts or check appointments on their calendars through voice-activated commands. It is designed to work with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 PDA operating system or the Windows Pocket PC Phone Edition software. Drivers are expected to be the primary market for Voice Command. Several U.S. states have laws regulating cell-phone use while driving, and voice-activated software would allow drivers to keep both hands on the steering wheel and both eyes on the road. In addition to calendars and contacts, Voice Command will also allow users to play songs on their PDAs or phones by speaking the name of the artist, song or album. Applications such as Outlook, Internet Explorer and other software can also be launched using voice commands, the company said.
