Federal Funding Opportunities
(source: www.ssti.org May 3, 2004)

Department of Commerce
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is soliciting proposals for funding to support comprehensive, entrepreneurial and innovation-based economic development efforts. The goal is to enhance the competitiveness of regional business environments that result in increased private investment and higher-skill, higher-wage jobs. Approximately $285.1 million has been appropriated for EDA programs in FY 2004. Grant awards will not exceed 50 percent of a project's cost. Eligible applicants for and eligible recipients of EDA financial assistance are defined at 13 CFR 300.2. Proposals are accepted on a continuing basis. More information is available at: http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/14mar20010800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2004/04-9810.htm

Department of Defense
The Department of the Air Force also seeks to identify firms capable of providing biological research and development. The goal is to identify unknown chemical mechanisms, theoretical and experimental reaction rate constants, and degradation compounds associated with specific compounds. Results will be integrated into existing software models. All qualified sources are encouraged to submit responses, which are due May 14, 2004. One contract award is anticipated. More information is available at: http://www1.eps.gov/spg/USAF/AFSC/45CONSb423/T6403/listing.html

SBC Foundation
The SBC Foundation is accepting applications for funding under the SBC Excelerator technology grants program. This program seeks to fund projects that build the technology infrastructure of nonprofits, enabling them to increase their organizational effectiveness or service delivery capability. Examples of qualifying projects include expanding or enhancing Internet access, data networking, online outreach, increasing staff technology capacity, and pooled technology resources. Approximately $9 million is available for one-year grants, which typically range from $2,500 to $25,000. Collaborations by two or more organizations will be considered for grants of up to $50,000. To be eligible, organizations must have an emphasis in education, community development, health and human services, or arts and culture. Applications are due Aug. 13, 2004.
