Basically Useless Information – What separates “60 Minutes” from every other television show? (Answer later) To attract technically proficient employees, many companies are going right to the Internet. A report from iLogos Research indicates that many of these companies consider the corporate Web site a vital component of an organization's overall recruiting effort. Of the companies using corporate Web site recruiting, the survey found:
Using television to reach women with children could be getting harder for advertisers thanks to increasing Internet use, according to new findings from a survey conducted by Jupiter Media Metrix and NPD Group. The survey found that 44 % of Internet-using U.S. women with children said that online activities decreased the amount of time they spent watching TV. The survey also suggests that online mothers are attracted to online sales and incentives. One major impact is to firms like manufacturers, who annually rank among the top-spending television advertisers. According to a recent Gartner report, most businesses have a one- or two-server configuration. Now, however, many companies are adding a third server for added security that works as an intermediary, relaying transaction and content information between the other two. Hardware costs have declined to a point where companies can afford to buy more server capacity than they presently require. According to Forrester Research, a growing trend in e-business is the use of application servers, set up to handle operations that involve interactions between customers and back-end systems and databases. These servers handle interactive catalogs, personalization and order management and can adapt easily to the needs of small and large businesses. A big issue many companies should consider is whether to set up Web server operations internally or to outsource such functions to a hosting provider. According to a research report by Giga, some "moderately trafficked" commerce sites can save money by outsourcing Web hosting to an outside vendor. For example, the cost to purchase three Web servers for either an in-house or hosted site could be about $30,000. But a company's bill for network equipment -- including switches and routers -- would be about $20,000 if the site were hosted, versus $50,000 to fully equip an in-house site. Hosted sites also can save companies money in terms of staffing and can provide the 24/7 technical support and monitoring that a Web site requires. With every new advance in technology more and more cyber criminals appear. A Gartner report indicates that the biggest risk WLAN users face is when a hacker pretends to be an actual access point on the network. Wireless networks are very “open” because they send data over radio waves and an outsider can gain access to the wireless network and flood the network with traffic, thereby creating a denial of service situation. All of this is a challenge for developers of security protocols. But just because your system has WEP -- the most basic security system that comes with a WLAN installation – it does no good if your management system does not properly execute the system. A Gartner survey conducted last year found that more than 60% of the survey’s networking installations did not have WEP turned on. Each enterprise will have to determine for itself how much security they are willing to trade for convenience if they want to take advantage of the ever-increasing benefits of mobile technology. A recent Reuters report warned taxpayers that more states are using computers and information technology to increase revenue and fee collection. Four such states have already dug up an extra $912 million overlooked by human staffers. This software points staff toward the most lucrative examination prospects and researches state databases to find people and companies that are not filing tax returns. A new survey conducted by Consumer WebWatch reveals that consumers in the US don’t trust ecommerce sites. Approximately 29% said that they didn’t trust ecommerce websites and 33% said they didn’t trust sites that gave advice on products or services. This compares with 58% of consumers who trusted newspapers and television news and 47% who said they trusted the federal government in Washington. The report indicates that Internet users want commerce sites to provide easy to find and clearly stated information that will help them judge a site’s credibility, who runs individual sites and how it deals with any problems that may arise. Amazon has announced that it will take over the online operations of Waldenbooks, a subsidiary of Borders, thereby permitting customers who buy certain books, music and movies through Amazon to pick up their purchases in Borders stores nationwide. This extends Amazon’s brick-and-mortar reach and may help address the perennial issue of shipping and handling costs by offering consumers an alternative to paying those costs. Some electronics items have been available for in-store pickup through an agreement with Circuit City. Mississippi State University has begun a course in crime investigation using advanced computer forensic techniques, in order to get evidence against hackers, embezzlers and child pornographers as part of their Center for Computer Security Research. Law enforcement's need for high-tech sleuthing is the result of computer use in virtually every aspect of life, including criminal activities. Terrorism also is a target of computer forensics. We all use credit cards as a routine method of payment these days but in the near future we may be able to use our mobile phone for this purpose through Cellerate, a new mobile payment system. The first test will be this summer at service stations in Texas and at 7-Eleven stores located in those stations, as well as paying for fast food and making purchases from vending machines. After that, the plan is to offer mobile payments for parking, DVD rentals and tickets to entertainment events. ANSWER: There is no theme song.
